The difference between host-read and programmatic podcast ads, how each is priced, and which one suits a B2B brand selling to a specific Australian audience.
There are two main ways to put an ad in a podcast. A host can read it, in their own words, as part of the show. Or software can insert a pre-recorded ad into episodes across many shows at once. They are priced differently, reach different people and do different jobs.
For a B2B brand selling to a defined audience, the choice usually comes down to one question: do you need reach, or do you need the right people to trust you?
Host-read ads
The host reads your message, usually in their own words and often with a personal angle. The ad sits inside the conversation, so it sounds like part of the show.
Strengths: the host's credibility carries over to your brand; listeners are less likely to skip it; you can choose exactly which shows and audiences you appear in front of.
Limits: you reach one show's audience at a time; each read takes planning and approval; scale is limited by the number of shows that fit.
Usually priced: per episode or per campaign, at a flat rate.
Programmatic ads
A pre-recorded ad, often voiced by your own team, is inserted automatically into many shows through an ad platform. The ad can change over time, and the same episode can carry different ads for different listeners.
Strengths: broad reach quickly; targeting by category, location or device; easy to switch creative.
Limits: you often do not control exactly which shows carry your ad; there is no host endorsement; listeners treat it more like a radio spot.
Usually priced: per thousand plays (CPM).
Which suits a B2B brand?
| If you need... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Trust with a small, specific audience, such as founders, investors or tech leaders | Host-read |
| A long sales cycle where familiarity matters | Host-read, over a run of episodes |
| Broad awareness across a whole category or country | Programmatic |
| To test many messages quickly | Programmatic |
Most B2B sponsors in Australia sell to a few thousand decision-makers, not millions of consumers. For them, being recommended by a host those decision-makers already listen to tends to count for more than raw reach.
Formats between the two
Branded segments: a recurring part of one show that you own, read by the host each week.
Custom series: a short show of your own, produced and distributed through a network.
Network bundles: host-read placements across several related shows at once, for more reach without losing the host's voice.
How Day One does it
Day One sponsorships are host-read. Hosts read your story in their own words, inside the episode, with a custom tracking link, and you approve the copy first. Campaigns can run on one show or as a network bundle across several. Six episodes on one show start at A$15,000 +GST.
